This is the first enrollment period you will encounter. This is when you first become eligible for Medicare. You have a 7 month window to enroll in Medicare and it happens 3 months before the month of your birthday, the month of your birthday and 3 months after your birthday. If you enroll within the first 3 months, you can expect your coverage to begin the first of the month of your birthday month. However, if you wait to enroll past the month of your birthday, your effective date may be pushed forward.
From October 15th to December 7th you can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Health Plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) with or without drug coverage. Your coverage will begin on January 1 (as long as the plan gets your request by December 7). This enrollment period does not apply to Medicare Supplement Ins (Medigap) plans.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period is from January 1 – March 31.

If you missed your initial enrollment, you can enroll in Medicare Part B for the first time using the General Enrollment Period. The time period is between January 1 and March 31 of every year.
Once your Initial Enrollment Period ends, you may have the chance to sign up for Medicare during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). If you're covered under a group health plan based on current employment.
Other special circumstances allow you to make changes to your Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug coverage.
